Do days in Bulgaria count toward your 90 days?
Bulgaria is one of the newest Schengen members: its land borders opened on 1 January 2025, after air and sea checks had already been lifted on 31 March 2024. From the 2025 date it is fully inside the borderless area, so days spent in Bulgaria draw down the same 90-in-180 allowance as France, Germany or Greece.
This is a recent change, and it trips people up. Older guides - and some calculators that have not been updated - still treat Bulgaria as a separate, non-Schengen country whose days do not count. That advice is now out of date: since January 2025 you must include Bulgarian days in your Schengen total.
Add your Bulgaria trips to the calculator exactly like any other Schengen stay. A week in Sofia and a week in Spain is two weeks against your 90 days - they share one pool, not two.
How to use this calculator for a Bulgaria trip
Add your Bulgaria dates alongside your other Schengen trips - since January 2025 they share the same 90-day pool. If a guide tells you Bulgarian days don't count, it predates full membership.

Frequently asked questions
Do days in Bulgaria count toward the Schengen 90/180 limit?
Yes, since 1 January 2025. Bulgaria became a full Schengen member on that date, so days there now draw down the same 90-in-180 allowance as the rest of the area.
Did days in Bulgaria always count toward Schengen?
No. Before full membership Bulgaria ran its own separate short-stay rule. Only from 1 January 2025, when its land borders opened, do Bulgarian days count toward the shared Schengen total.
Is Bulgaria in the Schengen area now?
Yes. Bulgaria is a full Schengen member - its air and sea borders opened in March 2024 and its land borders on 1 January 2025.
Will I need ETIAS to visit Bulgaria?
Yes. As a Schengen member Bulgaria is covered by ETIAS, so visa-exempt travellers will need an authorisation once the system launches.
