Taiwan's citizens travel visa-free to the Schengen area for short stays, and that status is why ETIAS will apply. ETIAS is an online authorisation linked to your passport, not a visa.

ETIAS leaves the 90/180 rule unchanged for Taiwanese travellers; it is a pre-travel step completed online before you fly.

Your passport must show your ID number

The visa exemption - and therefore ETIAS eligibility - applies to ordinary Taiwan passports that contain the holder's personal identification number on the data page. Passports without an ID number are treated differently. Make sure your passport shows your ID number and is valid for at least three months beyond your departure from Europe.

How Taiwanese will apply

When ETIAS launches, Taiwanese will apply online on the official EU portal, pay €20 (free under 18 or over 70), and receive an authorisation linked to their passport for up to 3 years. It is not a visa - see what ETIAS is and how it differs from a visa.

ETIAS gets Taiwanese to the border; it does not extend the stay. Check how many days are left with the free 90/180 calculator.
